Abstract Multimedia Sculpture
I am driven to create sculpture of objects that exist nowhere beyond my imagination, infusing my sculptures with intriguing forms and textures that radiate energy and motion...Sculpture with a pulse all its own.
To achieve my goal, I had to create a new form of sculpture which I made by combing multiple works of my sculpture into what is best described as a sculpture of sculptures. My sculpture Out of the Blue, which was created from an assemblage of 81 individual sculptures, and Purple Rain assembled from 21 individual sculptures are excellent examples of this new form of sculpture.
The inspiration for the vast majority of my work is the natural world and I work with a wide variety of materials ranging from paper and wood, to Styrofoam and bronze to achieve my artistic vision.
My greatest joy is witnessing the spell-bound expressions people exhibit when first encountering one of my sculptures. Please take a moment and see why by viewing this short video on my 2018 bas-relief, Purple Rain.
Bas Relief Sculpture
How I create my bas-relief sculptures
Bas-relief is a sculpture technique in which figures and/or other design elements are more prominent than the (overall flat) background.
A bas-relief is a form of low-relief sculpture in which the sculpted elements remain attached to a flat background surface.
The phrase bas relief has been used since 1762 when referring to a molding, and most often to sculptures carved on classical buildings.
I use different types of mediums to create my sculptures. For more information, you can find a brief description on the pictures when the picture is clicked.
I had been creating sculpture, largely representational figurative works for more than a quarter of a century when I happened upon a film that would ultimately mark a major change in the direction of my work. That film was a spellbinding film on the life of Jackson Pollock titled Pollock. Seeing that film and witnessing the amazing evolution and the pure, explosive genius that defined his art made me, a sculptor, want to create a revolution of my own be seeing if I could somehow find a way to create sculpture that embodied the fluidity, rhythm and explosive qualities of a Pollock painting.
I began experimenting by drawing images on a sheet of Styrofoam using a hot wax needle, with the heat generated from the needle melting the lines I was drawing into the surface of the Styrofoam. As I became more and more experienced with this process, I gained a level of comfort and confidence that allowed my drawings to become increasingly gestural, sweeping and rhythmic. My “thermal” drawings were now, in all actuality, sunken relief sculptures. Aware that the sunken relief was not the right medium to realize my objective of creating Pollock like sculptures, I had to find a media that would let me cast a positive bas-relief from my sunken relief models. After considerable experimentation, I discovered a company making a paper pulp from cotton fibers that allowed me to create cast paper bas-reliefs from my thermal drawings (sunken reliefs). Some lovely examples of these works are Biorhythm, Stampede, Black Ice, and Transition.
Today my body of abstract art has evolved towards expressing my vision in a wide variety of materials ranging from paper, wood, polystyrene and resin.
